Ahead of the EU Environment Ministers meeting on December 17, the EDC-Free Europe coalition calls on governments’ support and leadership to use the upcoming discussions about the revision of the REACH Regulation as a pivotal opportunity to align EU chemical regulation with scientific evidence and public demand for stronger protection of health and environment against adverse effects caused by EDCs.
The EU’s flagship framework for industrial chemicals, the regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), remains inadequate to address the health threats posed by EDCs. With the EU Commission proposal to fix REACH announced for 2025, EDC-Free Europe calls on EU leadership to fulfil its concrete commitments under the European Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS), an initiative endorsed by all EU member states.
The letter sent out to EU member states representatives, puts forward recommendations to drive further progress in strengthening the European regulatory framework on EDCs, highlighting the need to address the following issues:
- Comprehensive and coherent control frameworks for EDCs
- Cocktail effect of chemical mixtures
- Information requirements
- Access to justice and compensation for victims of chemical harm
