In a letter addressed to European Commission Vice President Timmermans, as well as Commissioners Kyriakides and Sinkevicius, EDC-Free Europe coalition calls for urgent measures to reduce the levels of bisphenol A (BPA) that people in the European Union are currently exposed to.
In April 2023, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that people of all age groups in the EU are at health risk due to the current levels of exposure to BPA. The EDC-Free Europe coalition, alarmed by these conclusions, wrote to the European Commission Vice President Timmermans, who is responsible for the EU Green Deal, as well as to the Commissioners for Health and Food Safety, and the Commissioner for Environment. In the letter, EDC-Free Europe calls on their leadership to take immediate action and finally minimise exposure of people and the environment to harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals.
The ubiquitous exposure to bisphenols and other harmful chemicals, starting from early stages of life as documented by human biomonitoring studies, represents a violation of internationally and constitutionally protected human rights. These rights include the rights to life and health, as well as the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, as recognised by the UN General Assembly in July 2022.
